Rescuers in Mississippi say a dying woman was hard to understand, but many say they heard her say someone named Eric had burned her.
At least six firefighters and paramedics testified on Tuesday that they heard Jessica Chambers say what they meant by Eric. Earlier, a speech therapist stated that Chambers was so badly burned that she would not have been able to produce an articulated sound.
The five men and one woman testified on Tuesday during the new murder trial in the capital of Quinton Tellis, accused of killing Jessica Chambers in 2014 by setting her on fire. The jurors were unable to reach a verdict at the first trial last year.
Tellis' lawyers say the prosecutors are being tried by the wrong man and urging the jury to believe what firefighters, paramedics and others have heard on the roadside on the outskirts of Courtland.
Prosecutors say evidence, including cell phone slots, video, DNA on a key ring, Tellis' statements and a witness show him killing rooms.

At least four members of the Mississippi emergency teams said they heard a dying woman tell them that someone named Eric had burned her down.

A speech therapist says a Mississippi woman who suffered fatal burns could not speak clearly after being burned.
Carolyn Wiles Higdon testified on Tuesday during the Quinton Tellis trial, which is being retried for capital murder upon the death of Jessica Chambers in 2014. The jurors were unable to reach a verdict at the first trial last year.
Higdon says that Chambers was so badly burned that she could not have produced an "articulated" sound within two to three minutes of being burned.
This testimony could help defeat a key defense argument: Multiple members of the emergency teams heard a dying chamber say that someone named "Eric" had attacked it. Defense lawyers urged jurors to trust this testimony – a foundation for their arguments in the first trial.
Prosecutors say the evidence showed that Tellis had killed some rooms.

The defense insists that several members of the rescue teams heard the dying chambers say that someone called "Eric" had attacked him.
Tellis faces another indictment in 2015 after the death of Meing-Chen Hsiao in Monroe, Louisiana.
