A Tanzanian official said the death toll from a capsized ferry on Lake Victoria reached 167 while wooden coffins arrived at the scene.

Government Secretary-General John Kijazi spoke with reporters after the country's president ordered the arrest of those responsible for the disaster.

The heavily overloaded ferry capsized in the last stretch before the shoreline Thursday afternoon as people returning from a busy market day prepared to disembark.

The families of the victims are preparing to claim the bodies of their loved ones, while searches around the exposed ferry continue.

Nobody knows how many people were on the ferry, with a capacity of 101 people. Research efforts continue.
