LAFAYETTE, La. – The interest in the "Drag Queen Story Time" project of a Louisiana library is so high that the event moves into a community college auditorium.
A notice on the Lafayette Public Library Web page indicates that the October 6 th event is taking place from the library at the South Louisiana Community College Health and Science Auditorium due to security issues resulting from a overpopulation expected.
Libraries and bookstores across the country have run programs in which men reading have read stories to children. Some drew protests.
The Lafayette event is organized by the University Library and Umbrella Club, with readings from members of a section of the University of Louisiana and Lafayette Delta Lambda Phi, a brotherhood of gay, bisexual and progressive men.
Public comments at a parish city council meeting last month were extremely supportive. At a library council meeting last week, opponents seemed more numerous than supporters.
The books to read are "Strictly No Elephants", "From the Stars in the Sky to Fish in the Sea" and "The Rainbow Fish".
"Strictly No Elephants" speaks of a boy whose tiny elephant is excluded from a pet club. He creates a new club with a girl whose non-stinking skunk is also prohibited.
"Stars in the sky with fish in the sea" speaks of a child who can change shape, but can not decide what it should be. The choices of the child include boy or girl, bird or fish, cat or rabbit, tree or star. Classmates reject the child at the beginning.
"The rainbow fish" is avoided by other fish after refusing to give one of his beautiful scales to another fish. He then makes friends by giving all his scales except one.
