The Jets season is supposed to be focused on the future and the development of Sam Darnold. The general manager of the cash, Mike Maccagnan, must spend this off season. But for some players, the 2018 season counts. It's important for their wallet and the way that their career could take next season.
Among them, wide receiver Quincy Enunwa, who is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year.
After being injured in the neck all last season, he needed a productive 2018 year to attract interest as a free agent and maximize any offer that the Jets could present. But he was injured and played with a rookie quarterback who is experiencing growing pains, such as four steals in a 13-6 loss against the Dolphins last week, where the offense continued to beat.
Darnold is considered dubious for Sunday's game against the Bills at MetLife Stadium. Veteran Josh McCown got his first start of the season. This could actually bode well for Enunwa to have the kind of big day that will be remembered when free will comes.
McCown did not play all season when the Jets sold the franchise to Darnold, but he made 13 starts last year and 73 over his 16-year career. He has seen all the defenses and if it's hot, Enunwa considers himself a prime target against the Bills.
"Obviously, these are two different players and two different quarters," Enunwa said of Darnold, 21, and McCown, 39. "a quarterback likes compared to the other." I practiced with [McCown] all this year. The game time only brings light. "
Enunwa leads the Jets in reception with 25 and is second with 327. He has a touchdown and is about to finish with only 581 yards and two or three touchdowns for the year. These are hardly numbers that can make a lot of money in free agency.
Enunwa earned $ 2.9 million on a one – year contract signed before this season after suffering a neck injury at a training camp last season. It was the year to prove its value and gain the leverage it was missing a year ago.
He was slowed by a sprained ankle, missing games against the Vikings and Bears, and only four passes for 49 yards in his last three games. This kind of production is not going to bring him much more than the agreement he has made.
With seven games remaining this season, Enunwa has plenty of time to improve its value. But he has to increase his production. McCown's experience could be helpful.
"I will be where he needs me to make it easy for him," Enunwa said. "In this way, we automatically have this connection."
Before thinking of impressing the other teams, Enunwa must impress the Jets, with whom he will probably have the greatest value. The Jets will have to find long-term legitimate weapons for Darnold. Robby Anderson is a restricted free agent after this season and Jermaine Kearse is about to sign a new contract.
Enunwa had a number of intangibles in his favor, such as his ability to play with pain, his leadership and his willingness to win.
Enunwa played one of those extra efforts late in the fourth quarter against the Dolphins, when he caught a short pass and carried about four tacklers for a huge win in the middle of the field. These types of games can not be measured on a statistics sheet.
"It's my game," said Enunwa. "I just want to go out and be that person. I just want to be the person when you give me the ball, I can be that spark for the offensive. I have felt like I have done this since I was here.
The Jets and the rest of the NFL need to know more.
