A 48-year-old man with a history of good health who spent his life around dogs was forced to have his limbs amputated after contracting a rare blood infection that probably came from his own dog.
Greg Manteufel of West Bend, Wisconsin, landed in the emergency room last month with what he thought was the flu, Fox 6 Now.
According to Manteufel's wife, he spent all his life around dogs.

"That hit him with revenge," Dawn Manteufel, his wife, told the newspaper. "Just some bruising on him." It looks like someone beat him with a baseball bat. "
Subsequent tests revealed that Manteufel had contracted an infection with a bacterium identified as capnocytophaga, which is found in dog saliva. The bacterium can cause serious infections in immunocompromised individuals and can spread through bites or through close contact with infected dogs.
Patients infected with the bacteria may have blisters around the bite, redness or swelling, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, headache and muscle and joint pains. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), symptoms usually appear within three to five days, but can take up to two weeks to appear. Severe infections can be life-threatening within 72 hours of the onset of symptoms.
