The mayor of Leggett NC, his wife was shot dead, sheriff Edgecombe says

Authorities on Thursday ranked the case of a married couple found dead in their Edgecombe home on Thursday as a double homicide.

Although the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office did not initially disclose the names of the victims and refused to do so again on Friday, a Leggett City Commissioner identified the couple as the mayor of Edgecombe. Leggett and his wife Jackie Skelton. .

"I can not say enough about them," said Commissioner Teresa Summerlin at the Charlotte Observer. "They were the epitome of good people. … it's devastating.

Keith Earl Williams, 25, of Tarboro, was charged with first degree murder in the case, Sheriff of Edgecombe County Cleveland "Clee" Atkinson Jr. said at a press conference on Friday morning.

Another person of interest was arrested for unrelated charges, said Atkinson.

The criminal records show that Williams was released conditionally from the state prison on August 28, just over a week before the deaths were discovered.

Williams had served consecutive sentences for April 2017 convictions for possession of firearms by a criminal and assault with a deadly weapon, according to the archives. In March 2013, he was convicted of a serious crime and placed on probation, depending on the file. His probation was revoked in 2014 due to other offenses and he went to jail.

MEPs found the couple after responding to a social check on Thursday at 7218 N.C. 33 in Tarboro, near the Leggett community, said Atkinson.

"A missing persons report has been generated and deputy ministers and detectives have begun to investigate," said Atkinson. "We were able to solve this double homicide in less than eight hours."

Police services in Tarboro and Rocky Mount, the Nash County Sheriff's Office, the North Carolina Highway Patrol, and wildlife officials participated in the ongoing investigation.
