Five people, including an eight-year-old child and a fourteen-year-old kid, were shot dead during a memorial ceremony on Thursday night in upstate New York, police said.

Shipping newspapers said police responded to a shootout in a house in Syracuse after 9 pm, the Post-Standard reported.

According to witnesses, the number of suspects varied, with some claiming that two and three others said so.

Neighbors told the police that about 50 people had gathered in front of a house to commemorate the death of a man recently deceased from cancer. When gunshots broke out, the neighbors entered the house to take cover. Neighbor reports on the shooting indicated that 10 to 15 shots had been fired, according to the Post-Standard.

Witnesses and family members told the police that the house where the shooting took place belonged to Rashaad Walker Jr., a 20-month-old man who was shot and wounded in 2010, according to the Post-Standard.
