New York Mets and Brodie Van Wagenen are working on an agreement that will see the player agent take over as the team's general manager, according to several reports released on Saturday.
Les Mets have chosen Van Wagenen on Chaim Bloom, senior vice president of baseball operations at Rays, and expect the terms of the agreement to be finalized by the end of the weekend, according to MLB .com. conclusion of the world series.
Van Wagenen, 44, is a controversial choice for the job. Mets players Yoenis Cespedes, Jacob deGrom, Todd Frazier and Tim Tebow are among the names he represents at CAA Baseball. With Bloom, the former general manager of Brewers Milwaukee Brewers, Doug Melvin, was taken into consideration for the opening of the Mets before being ruled out as an option earlier this week.
Sandy Alderson, the former Executive Director of the Mets, took a leave of absence in June after revealing that her cancer had returned in April. Alderson, 70, said the team's standings (the Mets were 77-85 this year) did not deserve a return.
Assistant General Manager John Ricco and Special Assistants J.P. Ricciardi and Omar Minaya led the team for the remainder of the season.
