Oprah Winfrey's mother, Vernita Lee, died at her home in Milwaukee, at Thanksgiving, at the age of 83, confirmed her family in a press release sent today.
Lee, born May 2, 1935, gave birth to Winfrey, aged 64, to adolescence in 1954 in Mississippi. She worked as a housekeeper throughout her life, settling in Milwaukee at the age of six after moving south.
The TV magnate is the eldest of Lee's four children. Winfrey's half-sister, Patricia Lee Lloyd, and her half-brother, Jeffrey Lee, died in 2003 and 1989, respectively.
Lee leaves behind Winfrey and his daughter Patricia Amanda Faye Lee, whom she renounced for adoption at birth and returned to life later. Lee also leaves four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
The private funeral has already taken place, announced the family.
Oprah lamented Lee's passing on Instagram on Monday.
"Thank you all for your kind words and condolences on the death of my mother, Vernita Lee," wrote the mogul. "It brings great comfort to our family, knowing that she has lived a good life and that she is now at peace."
Lee said she was a mother of Oprah in a 2007 interview with Milwaukee WTMJ.
"I knew that Oprah was going to be something," she said, "I loved her as she likes people, now."
Lee said that she was very proud of Oprah's work in the movie "The Color Purple" of 1985, which won 11 Oscar nominations.
Lee also talked about the death of two children.
"I am a Christian and if you are a Christian, it will help you cope with such situations," she said.
Winfrey has no children, which she talked about in an interview last year.
"I did not want babies," she said in an interview with Good Housekeeping UK. "I would not have been a good mom for babies, I do not have patience."
