Oprah Winfrey's mother, Vernita Lee, died at home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Thanksgiving Day, the family told PEOPLE in a statement. She was 83 years old.
Lee was born on May 2, 1935 and worked as a housekeeper all her life. She is survived by Winfrey and her daughter Patricia Amanda Faye Lee, whom she abandoned for adoption at birth and reconnected with later in life. Lee also had two other children – his son Jeffrey Lee, who died in 1989, and his daughter Patricia Lee Lloyd, who died in 2003.

A spokesman for Winfrey said his mother had already been buried at a private burial.
In an interview with Milwaukee's local TMJ4 station, Lee explained how she survived the deaths of two of her children.
"I am a Christian and if you are a Christian, it will help you deal with such situations," she said.
Winfrey posted two videos on his Thanksgiving Instagram page, including a preview of his feast. She has been out of social media ever since.
In the interview, Lee explained that she gave the example of giving another love, what her daughter made a career for.
"I loved her as she likes people now," she said, adding that her proudest moment was in 1985 when Winfrey " Purple color. "
Vernon Lee's mum and dad met once before welcoming Winfrey in 1954. Winfrey then traveled between the homes of his parents and grandparents throughout his childhood.
