An American astronaut said he will not hesitate to mount a Russian rocket next month, despite several incidents.
NASA astronaut Anne McClain said Friday that spaceflights were never 100% safe and that it was by chance the last two Soyuz missions bound for the International Space Station encountered problems .
Last month, the astronauts had to make an emergency landing after a failed launch. A month earlier, an air leak from the space station had been located in a mysteriously drilled hole in a moored Soyuz capsule.
McClain is scheduled to take off on Dec. 3 for his first space flight, with a Russian and a Canadian. She says her family is used to her risky job, given her experience of combat flying in the army.
She says she wants to teach her young son and other children that sacrifices are needed to make dreams come true.
