The national security agency uses data-processing centers run by AT & T to spy on Americans – and one of the spies is located in the middle of Hell's Kitchen, according to a report.
Intercept identified eight telecommunications facilities across the United States that the NSA reportedly used to monitor billions of emails, social media posts, Internet browsing history and conversations for years.
"It's telling and disturbing to see how well this is going on here on American soil," said Elizabeth Goitein, co-director of the Liberty and National Security Program at the Brennan Center for Justice. "It puts a face on the monitoring that we could never have imagined before in terms of actual buildings and actual facilities in our own cities, in our own courses."
The website reviewed classified NSA documents, public documents and interviewed several former AT & T employees – who indicated that the buildings are at the heart of a spy initiative of the NSA.
One of the spies is in Manhattan at 811 10th Ave., and others are located in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, DC, reported the point of sale.
All are AT & T buildings – called "peering" or "backbone" – and are used to process customer data and carry large amounts of data from other Internet providers, reported the point of sale.
Companies that "peer" with AT & T include Sprint, Cogent Communications and Level 3.
All eight buildings are tall, with blackened or windowless windows – but could easily sneak into the skyline of an unnoticed city, the site reported.
By installing surveillance equipment in Atlanta's facility hubs, the NSA could bring together "not only AT & T data, but also all data exchanged between the AT & T network." and other companies, "said Mark Klein, former AT & T technician 22, said the website.
