The pilot of the helicopter that crashed while he was carrying a newlywed couple since their wedding in Uvalde towards their honeymoon crushed against a 1,400-foot hill located about 100 feet from the summit, according to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board accident.

Both William Byler and Bailee Ackerman Byler, both 24, were killed at the moment of impact shortly after midnight on November 4th. The pilot of the helicopter, Gerald Lawrence, aged 76, was also killed.

The preliminary report released Tuesday by the NTSB does not list the definitive cause of the accident. According to weather data collected by the security office, visibility was 10 km and cloud conditions were clear. The winds were around 6 knots, a light breeze.

The hill where crashed the Bell 206B helicopter is located about 5 miles east of Byler Ranch, from where the group left, and about 71 miles to the 39, west of San Antonio International Airport, their destination.

Shortly after the collision, "the Uvalde County Sheriff's Office was informed of the possibility of a plane shot down northwest of Uvalde, Texas," the report says. "A search effort by local authorities and volunteers found the wreckage around dawn."

At a press conference held the day after the crash, gamekeepers Dennis Gazaway and Rachel Kellner described the search. They said that an automatic distress signal from the helicopter had alerted authorities around 1:30 am, an hour and a half after the accident.

At sunrise, they used ATVs to reach the crash site. They found the helicopter totally destroyed and its wreckage scattered about a hundred meters from the hill.

"The helicopter was in terrible condition, several pieces," said Kellner.

The authorities have declared the three victims dead on the scene.

Craig Hatch, the investigator in charge of the NTSB, and technical representatives of the aircraft and engine manufacturers have inspected the crash site. According to the preliminary report, they had to use ropes to stabilize the wreck and prevent it from hitting the hill.

"The hill also prevented a detailed review of the wreckage on the site," notes the report.

Once the investigators documented the wreckage as much as possible, the helicopter was conducted to a rescue facility for further examination.
