With more than 150 breweries in San Diego alone, it's hard enough to make a name for itself. Imagine trying to do this against more than 800 of the best breweries in the country.
A small brewery at Ocean Beach has managed to do this weekend at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver by winning gold for its American ale, B.Right On Pale Ale.
"This is the first beer I've ever brewed at the OB Brewery," Brewmaster John Millea said. "It's a blond beer I'm very proud of and we had the chance to win the gold medal. I was pretty happy.
The category was one of the most engaged categories in the competition with 170 participants.
The winners were announced Saturday.
Organized by the Brewers Association, the Great American Beer Fest is the largest craft beer competition in the country. More than 800 breweries participated in the competition this year and nearly 8,500 beer entries.
"It's such a big festival and there are so many good beers coming out," Millea said. "Just taking part is pretty cool and winning the medal is great. I am beside myself.
What makes the victory more impressive, is that the brewery was opened only in July 2016. The OB brewery has also been recognized as the small brewery of the year.
"We have been open for two years and we are changing. Getting this recognition is great, "said Millea. "I feel great. I'm very happy.
This is not the first time the Brewers Association has recognized the OB brewery. Last year, the brewery brought in cash for its hidden gem, a German style wheat beer.
In addition to the OB Brewery, the San Diego Breweries were well represented at this year's competition with 11 home medals.
