The Ohio State Buckeyes AD refuses the discussion report with Ryan Day

Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith responded Sunday to a report from The Athletic that the school was in discussion with offensive coordinator Ryan Day to make him the Buckeyes head coach.

Smith said the Ohio State appreciated Day's work, but they are confident that Urban Meyer will be the head coach for yet a long time.

Smith reiterated the statement in a text message to Heather Dinich of ESPN.com, saying, "Urban will be our head coach for quite a while."

Day, 39, was Ohio State's interim head coach for the first three games of the season. A two-week investigation revealed that Meyer had mismanaged employment and domestic violence allegations about former broadband receiver coach Zach Smith. Meyer was suspended without pay until 2 September and was banned from coaching the team in his first three matches.

During the suspension, Day led the Buckeyes to a 3-0 record, beating Oregon State, Rutgers and TCU, while his offense offended opponents 169-62 in all three games. His name appeared in coaching research after the 2017 season, eventually choosing to stay at the Ohio State, despite the offers that included joining the Tennessee Titans as offensive coordinator.

Day was promoted to offensive coordinator as offensive coordinator and senior caller in January, and while it is very likely that the Buckeyes would like him to stay, Smith calmed reports that Ohio State went so far as to make him head coach pending.

Meyer thanked Day for his efforts during his press conference after the Buckeyes 49-6 win over Tulane, which was Meyer's first game on the sidelines.

"We introduced (Day) with the match ball after," said Meyer. "3-0, it's a very good record, I'm not sure of the exact winning percentage, but it's quite high, it did a great job."
