The oldest man and the most veteran of American military would have been the victim of an identity theft.

According to the family of Richard Overton, a Second World War veteran who lives in Austin Texas, an unknown thief created a fake bank account with Overton's Social Security number and accessed his personal account, the Dallas Morning News.

Volna Overton, his third cousin, said that the identity thief has been using Overton's money for months to buy savings bonds

"That is going to be a failure for Richard, "she said. "It was a considerable amount of money."

The Overton bank account is however separate from a GoFundMe account that has funded its home care since December 2016. The page raised nearly $ 340,000

. A friend from Overton filed a police report on Friday.

Overton was verified as the oldest living man in America and the oldest American veteran by the Gerontological Research Group.

According to the Morning News, Overton maintains a daily habit of 12 cigars and sometimes indulges in whiskey and cola.

Overton served in Hawaii and the South Pacific during the Second World War. He moved to East Austin in 1945 and has been there ever since. He was honored a year ago in Washington, DC, for the Veterans Day by President Barack Obama.
