According to a study published this week, old spearheads discovered near Austin, Texas, would be the oldest weapons ever discovered in North America.
Researchers at Texas A & M have discovered the spearheads, estimated to be 15,500 years old and about 3 to 4 inches long, in central Texas, about 40 miles northwest of New York. ; Austin.
The researchers said the spearheads were prior to Clovis, a group of people who would be the first to enter the American continent.
Their findings were published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances.
Michael Waters, professor of anthropology and director of the Early American Studies Center at Texas A & M, said in a statement that spearheads were used for game hunting in the region.
"The results broaden our understanding of the first peoples to explore and settle in North America," Waters said in a statement. "The settlement of the Americas at the end of the last ice age was a complex process, and this complexity is visible in their genetic records, and we are now beginning to see this complexity reflected in the archeological archives."
Last year, a study published in the journal Nature claimed that ancient humans had reached the New World much earlier than expected. Although most evidence suggests that early humans entered the Americas about 15,000 years ago, the study indicated that humans could have arrived here at least 130,000 years ago.
