A licensed firearms owner was arrested Thursday for his role in helping police in suburban Chicago to arrest a suspect who was firing an automatic gun, officials said.
Officials congratulated the anonymous civilian for his actions as they stood in front of a hospital where Cicero police officer Luis Duarte, 31, underwent surgery for four gunshot wounds sustained during the shooting.
"We were fortunate to have a citizen on the street, there is a cache-keeper, and he also fired shots," said Jerry Chlada Jr., Cicero's superintendent of police.

The chaos broke out just after 17h. when Duarte, a four-year-old departmental veteran, and his partner tried to get a vehicle down at Cicero for a routine road check. Instead, the driver took off on a ramp leading to Interstate 55, within the city limits of Chicago.
The agents put the vehicle in traffic and the suspect went out and started shooting with the automatic weapon while he was running away, reported Fox 32 Chicago. The officers fought back.
The owner of the concealed vehicle then exited his vehicle and started firing at the suspect.
"He went out and started helping the police, which I must be proud of," said Cicero Town President Larry Dominick at the Sun-Times.

The suspect was hit once but it was unclear whether the bullet came from the officers or the cache wearer.
Duarte suffered injuries to one arm, one leg and his abdomen, but he was talking and was on alert before the surgery, officials said.
The suspect was taken to hospital and classified in serious condition. His weapon was found on the scene.
