STAMFORD – A Connecticut gallerist could soon learn when he will receive a probation program to help place a steel sculpture of a drug spoon outside the Purdue Pharma drug manufacturer's headquarters for protest against the epidemic of opioids.
Fernando Alvarez is scheduled to appear in the Stamford Superior Court on Monday. He requested accelerated re-education, which would result in a misdemeanor charge of obstructing the freedom of passage cleared from his record if he passed a probationary period.
Alvarez has a gallery in Stamford. He and the artist Domenic Esposito filed in June the sculpture 11 feet long and 4 feet high in front of Purdue Pharma's offices in Stamford.
Purdue Pharma denies allegations in state and local government lawsuits that its commercialization of OxyContin, an opioid analgesic, has contributed to fueling the opioid crisis.
