GREEN BAY, WIS. – One of the worst days in the NFL for over two decades will not cost Mason Crosby his job.
The Green Bay Packers remain loyal to the 12-year-old veteran, the leader of the team's franchise scorers.
In the 31-23 defeat at Detroit on Sunday, Crosby became the first kicker to miss four goals and one more point in the same game since Cole Ford of the Raiders in 1997, according to research by ESPN Stats & Information.
Crosby missed his only goal in the first period three times. After a change of crampons, he missed another in the second half, plus an extra point, before making a 41-yard run with 2 seconds to go. Crosby's absences were 41 yards (wide left), 42 (right), 38 (wide right) and 56 (wide right). His missed PAT hit the left amount.
"He's a proven and very successful kicker," said Packers coach Mike McCarthy. "I still believe in him, but he knows he must succeed, it's a different game at half-time, so hopefully we'll learn from it and move on."
There does not seem to be any problem with snaps or hold, although Crosby has worked with a rookie snapper (seventh-round pick Hunter Bradley) and a rookie incumbent (fifth-round pick JK Scott, the bettor) this season.
Crosby, who scored 79.8% of field goals, had made 10 of 11 previous attempts this season. He holds the NFL playoff record for most consecutive goals with 23 (from 2010 to 2016).
"We obviously have a long-term belief, but you also have your daily assessment," McCarthy said. "I think that he had an extraordinary training camp, I think he was hitting the ball as well as I can remember." He has a new operation again. mean, you're talking about a kicker who has undergone more changes of operation than me I remember my stint in the league, and he's an amazing leader with these two young guys. So there's certainly a growing curve which, I think, was obvious that we were going to have work, when the list was established.
"But in the end, it's about results and we know we have to be better and we have to succeed."
Crosby came back from a year of worst career in 2012, when he scored 63.6% of his goals. Since then, he has been better than 81% of field goals in all but one season.
"Mason is one of the most mentally challenged people I know and I'm confident in the world that we're going to bounce back as a unit and get back to our rhythm," Scott said on Monday. "I just want to be by his side in every way possible as a teammate and as a brother because I love him, he's a great guy, he's kind of taken me under his wing in many other ways than to be a football player … want to be there for him and encourage him in every way possible and just remind him of the simplicity of what we do.C & # 39; is really simple and we should be good. "
On Sunday, Crosby called his performance "anomalous".
Killing trouble was not the Packers' only problem the day after their loss to the Lions.
Despite his 442 yards and three touchdowns, Rodgers was deported early in the game and lost two fumbles against sacks. It's the first time that he has had two fumbles lost in a match since 2015.
"Well, I mean, he's not going to look for excuses, and I'm not going to get up here and go that route because he's playing a lot," McCarthy said. "I mean, he plays a lot in the game and he played a lot in the game. I think what he gave us is more than – I do not want to say more than what we expected He gave us a lot, and that's the reality, but he plays a lot. "
When asked if Rodgers had a problem at the knee, McCarthy said, "Once again, the details of everything in the medical record are what they are, they are specific to the individual, but I appreciate his fight. "
