The Pentagon identifies a Navy pilot killed in an accident in New Mexico

A Navy pilot who was killed in an A-29 plane crash in New Mexico on Friday was identified as Lt. Christopher Carey Short of Canandaigua, N.Y.

The Navy said Saturday night that Short had been killed when A-29 that he was flying crashed during a mission over the Red Rio bombing range near from Holloman Air Force Base.

"There is no way to describe the shock of this loss and the sadness we feel for his family," said Colonel Houston Cantwell, commander of 49 Wing Holloman, in a statement.

"He has done pioneering work in aviation that will help shape US air power for years to come.We are grateful to have known and grateful for his dedication to duty."

Two pilots were aboard the A-29, who was participating in the Air Force's Light Attack experiment when he crashed around 11:30.

The other pilot "suffered minor injuries and was flown to a local hospital," said 49 Wing in a statement released Friday.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
