The end of the season could be brutal for the young Philadelphia Phillies.
The Philadelphia Phillies, a very young team led by a first year coach, had to face a tough battle on September 20th. From that night, in Atlanta, and for the next ten days, Braves playing these Braves seven times with a four-day break from September 24th while playing in the Colorado Rockies. The alternatives were hoping for a lot of help against Colorado to win a wild card spot or miss the playoffs.
Their only "break" in the pressure against two teams out of a total of 29 games on .500 would follow the fourth match against Atlanta on Sunday, which would start at 13:35. before stealing two-thirds of the country to play Colorado the next night. On September 27, their game against the Rockies was also an afternoon game before a return flight to Philadelphia to play the Braves again the next night.
Rejecting the Phillies was a temptation for everyone, including this observer. Maybe everything was not lost, even considering Herculean tasks ahead. It appeared that for four of the next competitions, the Fightin 'Phils would send Aaron Nola and Jake Arrieta for two games each.
Nola had a phenomenal number for the season and Arrieta was a former Cy Young Award winner and world champion.

Immediate pressure
The most important games were the two coming immediately, however. In them, the Phillies would depend on the two weakest links in their rotation, Vince Velasquez and Nick Pivetta, and they had to win both games. A win in both teams would leave them 5½ behind Atlanta, and two losses would make them go back 7½ with only nine games left.
However, two wins would leave the Phillies only three and a half games behind the Braves, with Arrieta facing Sean Newcomb on Saturday afternoon.
It was the season essentially compressed in 48 hours. Velasquez's opponent on Thursday night would be Kevin Gausman, who qualified for the 2018 Orioles in Baltimore until the end of July. Pivetta would face Julio Tehran. In both games, Phillies pitchers would start with a reverse electronic auction at 4.50 or higher; in both games, Braves pitchers would sport an ERA of just under 4.00. The other statistics of the season were irrelevant, except during meetings with the team involved.
The particular stories
Gausman had faced the Phillies once this season with Baltimore and lost, but he had faced Atlanta with a 5-2 record. Velasquez had played Atlanta four times and lost all four games, the last time on May 22. The only two that seemed positive about this record were four of the 18 races he had dropped from the Braves. cliche, he was due. Vinny Velo had lasted between 2 2/3 and six innings in her starts.
Pivetta has also faced Atlanta four times, and the Phillies have won three of his matches, but he has personally been 1-1. He had faced the Braves for the last time on May 21 and had given them no rounds in seven innings in the match that he had won. Tehran had opposed the Phillies three times earlier in the season and had personally recorded a decision, a win, as his team went 2-1.

This did not seem particularly encouraging for Philadelphia, but it was. Saturday, it would be very very obvious that the chances of the Phillies are in a coma mortal or not. Otherwise, they would still have work to do.
