The President of the Republic of Moldova, Igor Dodon, was slightly injured when the car in which he was suffering an accident. Dodon was hospitalized after the return of his car Sunday, said the security services of the Eastern European country.

Presidential adviser Maxim Lebedinschi said Dodon did not need medical care after the accident near the town of Straseni, north of the capital, Chisinau. However, Dodon's mother and one of his three sons, who were traveling with him, were more seriously injured but also in a satisfactory condition, said Dr. Mikhai Chekan at the AFP news agency.

The collision occurred as cars from the presidential motorcade crashed into an oncoming vehicle as they passed another vehicle, Lebedinschi said. He said that the other car did not respect the rules of the road and more information would be available.

Anatolia Golea, spokesman for state security services, said the president was seriously injured. No other details were provided concerning the crash.

The images from Moldova showed a car of the presidential motorcade that seemed to have been overturned.

Dodon, who is pro-Moscow, won the presidency in 2016 after defeating a pro-European rival in what has been called an East-West showdown.
