Jair Bolsonaro, the right-wing Brazilian presidential candidate, was stabbed in the abdomen while he was campaigning in the street.

Globo TV reported that he was undergoing surgery Thursday afternoon, although his son said the wound was "superficial".

Police in the state of Minas Gerais, where Mr. Bolsonaro was attacked, said that they had arrested a man on the scene.

The controversial politician provoked indignation with homophobic and racist remarks, but he scored well in recent polls ahead of next month's presidential elections.

Globo TV showed images of Mr. Bolsonaro on the shoulders of supporters in a crowd in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais State, when he was stabbed.

He is shown doubling in pain before being dropped to the ground by his supporters.

The far-right politician, who spent nearly three decades in Congress, is promoting tough sanctions for criminals and has repeatedly stated that the Brazilian police should kill alleged drug traffickers at will

He openly praised the Brazilian military dictatorship, saying the regime should have killed more people.

Bolsonaro is being tried in the Supreme Court for a speech that prosecutors have declared inciting hatred and rape.
