Excessive and dangerous heat has overtaken the center of the United States and is spreading to the east coast for this weekend. As this heat is directed to the northeast, several consecutive days above 90 degrees are likely. Warm temperatures will last next week, and maybe until July 4th.

Heat is building across the central United States today with heat index values well above 100 degrees from Texas to Wisconsin. Des Moines, Iowa; Chicago, St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri, will see heat index values near or above 110 degrees. Some of the highest temperatures have now spread to the east, with 90 likely across the Appalachians, the southeast, and parts of the northeast.
Today is the day 1 of a heat wave of several days in New York.
On Saturday, much of the Midwest, South and Appalachians will see values for the heat index approaching 100 degrees or more. On Sunday, the heat really begins in the Northeast, with heat indices exceeding 100 degrees from Washington, DC, to New York and Hartford, Connecticut, to Albany, New York, and Burlington, Vermont.
Current temperatures this weekend across the Northeast will be good in the 90s, which means some parts of the Northeast will see its first heat wave of the season.

West Fires
There are currently 54 large forest fires throughout the western United States, from New Mexico to Alaska – the majority of fires having occurred in Alaska.
The spring fire in Costilla County, Colorado, burned 4,000 acres – burning several houses in the county. The county councils of Costilla County said some parts of the county were a disaster area. The fire is contained at 0% and some evacuations remain in place for parts of this county.
There will be another day of very warm temperatures in much of the West, with three-digit probabilities ranging from California deserts to Colorado and New Mexico. Temperatures will approach 100 degrees in parts of inner California today.
Gusts of wind, locally above 40 mph, low relative humidity and high heat, will bring the next series of intense fire conditions to parts of the west, from northern California to Colorado. Southern Utah and southwestern Colorado are of particular concern for fire development.
