On June 20, a World-Herald editorial titled "The CDC's Disturbing Findings on Suicide Demonstrate Need to Act" focused on the growing problem of suicide and called for an "accelerated response" from the community to connect people at risk to those who can help.

The Extra Mile project works with our local and state partners to prevent these tragedies. At the same time, however, it is fair to say that many of us could do more to find a solution, be it public health and prevention, public or elected positions, or those in the community. school.

There is a well-documented relationship between excessive consumption of alcohol and suicide death in the scientific literature. The Centers for Disease Control note that excessive consumption of alcohol is associated with a variety of injuries, including suicide. According to CDC data, 23% of suicides in Nebraska were attributable to alcohol between 2006 and 2010.

Organizations like the World Health Organization have recommended evidence-based policies that, if implemented, would reduce drinking and drinking in our communities. These strategies include raising the price (through higher taxes) as well as restricting the availability of alcohol and advertising. The WHO sees them as the most effective and cost-effective way for short-term governments to tackle the problem.

Alcohol is only a risk factor for suicide, but with solutions so clear and present, we should be doing more to prevent alcohol suicides in Nebraska before they happen.
