The queen prepares her son, Prince Charles, to take over in just three years, says a shocking new book.
If Her Majesty reaches the age of 95, she plans to become his heir to the Prince Regent, which means that he will be king in every sense of the word, with the exception of his name.
This technically means that she always fulfills her oath to serve her people until her death, while ensuring that the country has a monarch capable of performing her duties.
The huge decision is made possible by the Regency Act, but it has not been invoked since 1810 under the reign of George III.
The assertions were made by the new book of the Royal correspondent Robert Jobson, Charles, 70 years old: thoughts, hopes and dreams, which is being published in the Daily Mail.
The book also claims that the queen, now 92, and Charles are meeting to discuss state matters without private secretaries or royal aides to prepare him for this vital role.
It has also been added to the distribution list of shipping boxes that it has sent.
Robert, who says that the queen is "realistic and unenthusiastic about her future years," writes: "They both consider these meetings crucial for the proper functioning of the country and for future succession.
"In case of death or inability to continue to live ill, the queen has ensured that her heir is fully prepared and ready to take over."
Prince Charles, as well as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Sussex, has already taken over many of his mother's responsibilities.
He carries out more than 600 engagements each year and works 14 hours a day.
