Tekashi's lawyer 6ix9ine issued a statement claiming his client's innocence following the rapper's federal arrest Sunday night and charges that could lead to a life sentence. The rapper (whose real name is Daniel Hernandez) has been charged with racketeering and possession of firearms and incurs a minimum sentence of 32 years imprisonment when he is convicted.

"Daniel Hernandez is completely innocent of all the charges hanging over him," said Hernandez's lawyer, Lance Lazzaro, in a statement released on Wednesday. "An artist who represents a" gangster image "to promote his music does not make him a member of a company."

Much of the charges against Hernandez are related to his involvement in the Nine Trey Bloods, an allegedly violent gang in New York. According to Lazzaro's arguments at Hernandez's impeachment hearing Monday night, Hernandez was not a participating member of the gang, but had met gang members at a concert in 2017 and hired them as management and security. Four other Hernandez associates – all alleged gang members – were arrested Sunday night and Monday morning in connection with the same racketeering charges.

"Mr. Hernandez was a victim of this company and then took action by dismissing employees and publicly denounced this company through a morning show," Lazzaro's statement said.
