In an offensive game, it was only fitting that the Washington Redskins won their fourth victory of the year when a goal on the field had bounced off the post.
The Dallas Cowboys kicker Brett Maher's attempt to score 52 goals to tie the score in the final game of the game crushed the left post and caused a ruckus in FedEx Field's almost-filled stands. Instead of doing overtime, the Redskins were able to delay their frenzied return to Dallas in the 4:50 final, giving them a 20-17 win.
The win, their second in a row, sent the Redskins to 4-2 and kept them in first place in the NFC East, a half and a half behind the Cowboys (3-4) and Philadelphia Eagles.
The Redskins led with just three points behind their hated rival. Linebacker Ryan Kerrigan turned Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott into the Dallas goal line before his teammate Preston Smith took him down. put Washington 20-10 with 4:55 left.
The band came as the Cowboys frantically tried to ride a late rally. And it was the centerpiece of a game in which Washington limited offensive midfielder Ezekiel Elliott to just 34 yards, 99 rushing yards by halfback Adrian Peterson and retained his victory over a late touchdown from Prescott.
They also beat their rivals in the division – which they did only once last season – when they missed first-half scorers Paul Richardson and Jamison Crowder, as well as running back Chris Thompson . It was one of their ugliest wins: quarterback Alex Smith only threw 178 yards, but that was enough to win.
On Sunday, FedEx Field was filled with unprecedented energy this season. The cars blocked the roads in the stadium several hours before the match. A music scene had been installed in the parking lot and many of the grounds around the stadium were half full more than three hours before the kickoff. Inside, a crowd close to the capacity roared during the presentations.
Apparently inspired, the Redskins defense has invaded Elliott from the start. A group of Washington defenders followed wherever the Cowboys went. Dallas actually went on the back during his first training, shooting from his own 19 after three games.
Given the ball in an excellent position on the field, just two yards from the midfield, the Redskins advanced quickly. But in what has become a familiar story for the Washington offensive, the Redskins could do nothing with their good fortune. An interfering call with an offensive pass sent them back to midfield. Bibbs dropped a pass, and a screen pass only recovered the lost yards from the penalty spot. The Redskins were forced to beat.
This is how things went, neither of the two teams had much success in moving the ball.
Then, in the second quarter, Dallas went from his 17 to 49 in Washington, where Michael Gallup made a pass to cornerback Greg Stroman, who bit the scythe. Gallup opened the left lane to the left and Prescott hit it on the heels with a pass that turned into a decisive touchdown.
The Redskins had an excellent chance to score before half-time, and yet, just like last week, when they could not seize an opportunity in a similar position against Carolina, they could not move to score. Smith sent Doctson too much time into the end zone for the third downhill try of the 44. A hail Mary at the endzone hit Floyd in the chest during a scrum for the ball and fell incomplete.
But at the beginning of the second period, Washington resumed life offensively. Peterson played in the first three games of the third quarter, winning 37 yards. A 27-yard pass to Jordan Reed brought the Redskins to the Dallas 9-yard line. Then Washington dropped out, settling for a 10-7 lead and lead.
Later in the quarter, Washington again had the ball in midfield and again let Peterson carry it to the back of the net, mixing an 18-yard pass to Doctson and a 13-yard field in Bibbs, but has again stagnated on the 9-yard line. settle for early field placement in the fourth, putting the Redskins up 13-7.
