He told the summit that he was Republican since university, long before taking over the Columbus, Ohio-based company, but was now independent, saying he would "no longer support this nonsense in the Republican Party ".

"I did not publish an advertisement in the newspaper that said," I'm resigning, "he said, adding that he wrote to lawmakers to inform them that he was no longer a party member.

Wexner is the CEO of L Brands, a retail conglomerate that includes brands such as Victoria's Secret, Bath & Body Works, Henry Bendel, The White Barn Candle Company and La Senza.

The business tycoon has always donated to Republican candidates in national and federal elections, but during the 2016 presidential campaign, he criticized Donald Trump and his rival, Hillary Clinton, by comparing them to Roman emperors.

"We have this particular election," Wexner said, Fortune reported. "On the one hand, you can pick someone who is absolutely crazy or someone who is probably very selfish and dishonest."

In a speech last year, he said he was "ashamed" of Trump's refusal to criticize white supremacists after August's white nationalist rally in Charlottesville.

At the summit on Friday, Wexler congratulated former President Barack Obama, who a few days earlier had launched a fierce attack on Republican lawmakers in a speech in Ohio, in Wexner State.

Wexner described Obama's visit to Ohio as "a great moment for the community," according to the report.
