LOS ANGELES – It has become increasingly clear that Jon Gray is lost on a mound of the league. The Rockies hope the right-handed man can end up with a trip to Triple-A Albuquerque
"It was the right time to bring Jon to Triple-A to work on some things, not so much mechanically, but mentally, and to be aware of the inconsistencies that have occurred this season, "said manager Bud Black Saturday after the Rockies had opted for the right-hander. "We have to make sure that these things are sorted out.We thought it was better for him to work some of these things in the minor leagues."
In a matching move, the club recalled the outfielder athletic Raimel Tapia from Triple-A. Tapia was available for Saturday's game against the Dodgers.
Gray, age 26, was the starter of the Rockies and the aspiring club. Yet, despite a powerful arsenal that includes a fastball that usually buzzes at 95-96 mph fastball, a biting slider and an effective curve, Gray's season has been a huge disappointment. The third overall draft pick in 2013 was 7-7 with a 5.77 ERA, 29 steps and 119 strikeouts in 17 starts this season
Other stats reveal Gray's irregular season . Entered the game on Saturday, he had given 108 shots, the most in the National League. Still, his 11.64 withdrawals in nine innings are second in NL. and his 199 strikeouts are in fourth.
Right-handed Antonio Senzatela, 23, is likely to be Gray's replacement in the Colorado rotation and face San Francisco on Tuesday at Coors Field. Senzatela had a good start to Triple-A on Thursday, scoring 7 innings of goal-scoring innings, allowing three hits and scoring four.
Tapia, 24, joins the big-league club for the first time this season. In 74 games for Albuquerque, he scored .308, with 61 points scored, 10 homers, 25 doubles, seven triples, 48 RBIs and 18 stolen bases. In 70 games with the Rockies last season, Tapia beat .288, with two homers, 12 doubles, two triples, 16 RBIs and five stolen bases.
