TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 2 Clemson on Saturday beat first-year coach Willie Taggart 59-10, winning the defeat against the Florida States, beating the Seminoles with a 49-point loss that earned them the worst equality of their story. It was also the worst home loss of Florida State.
Only a few seasons ago, these two programs ran VAC. But as the Seminoles declined in recent years, the disparity between programs has increased. This was evident in the second quarter, when Clemson scored 28 points to take an insurmountable lead at halftime.
The 59 points allotted were tied with the second largest number of Seminoles (Oregon 2014, Auburn 1985). The Seminoles lost 63-20 against Louisville in 2016.
The season has been tough for Taggart since the start, when the Seminoles lost 24-3 at home against Virginia Tech in the first game. Although they have won three of their last four games in Clemson, they have not faced this level of competition yet.
With a patchwork offensive line and no running game to speak of, the Florida State's offensive could do nothing against one of the country's best defenses. Add to that unacceptable errors, including a sloppy snap that goes over Deondre Francois's head, a kicker penalty that cancels an unsighted placement, targeting and penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct, and it's easy to see at which the margin of defeat has become so great.
At half-time, at least half of the Doak Campbell Stadium was empty. The Seminoles put a touchdown late to prevent the record from being broken. The state of Florida suffered a 49-0 defeat to Florida in 1973.
It is not easier here in the quest to become an eligible bowl. The states of Florida, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Boston College and Florida are gone. Three of these teams are ranked and all have records of victories.
