Elon Musk's SpaceX company has made essential rocket launches, with a steady stream of dramatic successes and unfortunate failures. If you are anxious to know when the next SpaceX event will take place, we have good news for you: the Crew Dragon capsule will be sent for its inaugural test flight on January 7, 2019.
The Crew Dragon capsule has been in preparation for several years, with the goal of transporting astronauts to places such as the International Space Station (ISS). The capsule has seven seats for the crew to securely attach and four windows to enjoy the incredible view from space.
The first flight of the Dragon Crew will be called Demo-1, or DM-1, and will be sent into the atmosphere at the top of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The launch will take place at the Kennedy Space Center's Cape Canaveral, reputed to be the same launch site for the Apollo 11 mission that led the first astronauts to the moon.
SpaceX has launched a race against rival Boeing to launch the first private crewed space mission. Boeing is working on his CST-100 Starliner commercial crew transport gear with the goal of duplicating: sending NASA astronauts to the ISS and taking paying customers on low-orbit trips to make the experience of space. But Boeing's business is not yet ready for testing: their first unmanned test flight is scheduled for March 2019.
Eventually, SpaceX and Boeing will move to manned test flights once unmanned trials have been successfully completed. Both suppliers must demonstrate that their boats are safe and functional before the crew is allowed to participate in the test flights. These manned flights are also expected to take place next year: SpaceX plans to send its manned test flight in June 2019 and Boeing to test in August 2019.
The complete test flight planning dates are shown below, in accordance with NASA:
- "Boeing Orbital Flight Test (unmounted): March 2019
- Boeing buffer abort test: between OFT and CFT
- Boeing crew flight test (with crew): August 2019
- SpaceX Demo-1 (not prepared): January 7, 2019
- SpaceX Flight Drop Test: Between Demo-1 and Demo-2
- SpaceX Demo-2 (Crewed): June 2019 "
