Right Outta Compton Star Jason Mitchell offered words of support to Roseanne Barr on the red carpet at the BET Awards 2018.
"I think it's hard for society to have come to a place where, as you can not even take a joke anymore, do you see what I mean? Roseanne and I see no harm on Roseanne, "he told Nischelle Turner of ET.
Mitchell continued, "I want us all to get along, you know what I mean, I think we should all be able to coexist and in the meantime, I'll be able to joke because it's funny."
Barr made headlines when she posted a tweet referring to the former Obama White House advisor, Valerie Jarrett, as a product of the "Muslim Brotherhood" and the "Planet of the Apes" . The 65-year-old faced an instant backlash, and her series was quickly canceled by ABC.
The comedian went on the defensive several times, once tweeting: "I'm not a racist, I've never been and I'll never be," she exclaimed. "A stupid joke in a life of combat 4 civil rights 4 all minorities, against networks, studios, at the expense of my nervous system / family / wealth will never be taken from me."
Barr broke down last Sunday during a podcast interview with Rabbi Shmuley Boteach about the racist tweet that resulted in the cancellation of his hit television show, continuing to defend himself against the accusations of racism.
"God, it's really hard to say all that," Barr began. "I did not think about what they thought I meant, and that's what's so painful, but I have to face that it hurts people – and when you hurt people, even unintentionally, there is no excuse, so I do not want to apologize, I apologize to all those who felt offended and thought I wanted to say something that, in fact, I did not mean for my own ignorance. "
His last excuse comes a few days after it's been announced that a spin-off of Roseanne, entitled The Conners, was ordered to the series at ABC, without his participation.
