The story behind Kate Middleton's beautiful jewels at the Dutch banquet at Buckingham Palace

Over the last three months, the world has witnessed a dazzling array of British crown jewels, from Queen Mary's Diamond Headband by Meghan Markle to Princess Eugene Greville's Emerald Kokoshnik. Tonight, the Duchess of Cambridge released two other major pieces of the safe for a state banquet in honor of the King and Queen of the Netherlands at Buckingham Palace.

A Kensington Palace spokesperson confirms Vogue Kate Middleton wore the tiara of the love knot, associated with the wedding necklace of Queen Alexandra. They were first sighted on the duchess through the window of a Bentley, perched delicately around her head and neck.

The tiara of the knot of love is quite adorned, it contains 19 arches of diamonds decorated with 38 beads. It was commissioned for Queen Mary in 1913, manufactured by the British jewelery house Garrard.

Finally, it was passed on to Queen Elizabeth, who later offered her as a wedding present to her daughter-in-law, Princess Diana. Throughout her time as a princess of Wales, Diana wore it often, to such an extent that she became one of the most recognizable tiaras of the British royal family.

Kate Middleton continued her notoriety. She wore it during diplomatic receptions in 2015, 2016 and 2017, indicating that, like her deceased mother-in-law, she has a special affinity for the jewel.

It is the first time, however, that the Duchess of Cambridge wears Queen Alexandra's wedding necklace in public. As her name indicates, Queen Alexandra wore it on the day of her marriage to Edward VII in 1863.

Princess Alexandra

Alexandra was a Danish princess who, at 16, was chosen as the wife of the Prince of Wales, heir to the British throne. During her time as Princess of Wales, then Queen wife, she was world-renowned for her sense of fashion and charm – a bit like Kate Middleton herself.
