The flags of the Gwinnett County Police Department were half-staffed Sunday morning as the manhunt continued for a suspect accused of firing and killing a police officer on Saturday.

Tafahree Maynard, 18, of Snellville, remained free Sunday morning. Police believe that he fired the shot that killed officer Antwan Toney, who had been part of the force for nearly three years.

Another suspect, Isaiah Pretlow, 19, of Snellville, was arrested late Saturday night by US marshals and charged with aggravated assault. He was booked at the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office shortly before 6:30 am on Sunday and is being held without bail, according to prison records.

Anyone who meets Maynard should call 911, said the police, and anyone with information about his location should call 770-513-5710.

Police believe Maynard and Pretlow were together when Toney was summoned to investigate a "suspicious vehicle" on Saturday afternoon near the Shiloh Intermediate School in Snellville unincorporated.

Toney was shot as he approached the car, officials said.

The officer was "very jovial, very dedicated to his work and service to his community," said Gwinnett Police Chief Butch Ayers. He was just days away from his three-year anniversary as a policeman in the police.

He was the first Gwinnett officer killed in the line of duty since 1993, Ayers said. Toney comes from southern California, where his immediate family still lives.

Friends remembered Toney as someone who had "a lot of heart," reported Channel 2 Action News.

"He looked almost like a brother," said friend Reginald Pierre.
