Diane Tirado has been teaching for years, but she debuted in August at the West Gate K-8 School in Port St. Lucie as an eighth-grade American history teacher.
"Teaching is a call for me," she said.

She assigned a draft notebook, which she said gave students two weeks.
When several students failed, Tirado discovered what she calls a "zero zero" policy, which is reflected in West Gate's student and parent manual. Below the classification heading, in red letters, the manual says "NO ZEROS – THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE QUALITY IS 50%"
"And if they do not return anything?" Said Tirado, she asked the administrators. "We give them a 50." I'm going, "Oh, we do not do it." This is not kosher. "
It was terminated in Tirado on September 14, but there is no specific cause mentioned in the letter of the principal because she was still on probation, according to the letter.
On her last day after being informed, she had to pack up her classroom, Tirado wrote the message to her students on her whiteboard before she left and sent it through a class app. Several students responded in support.
"You were right not to give people 50 years old because why would you give them half a credit for doing nothing?" wrote a student.

Then Tirado released the picture of the white board on Facebook. Now it has been shared more than 400 times.
"I am so upset because we have a nation of kids who expect to be paid and live their lives just to show up and it's not real," Tirado said.
The West Gate Director reported his comments to the School District Information Officer.
Kerry Padrick, Director of Information, sent the following statement:
Diane Tirado was a teacher for St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) from July 30, 2018 to September 14, 2018.
SLPS is aware of the importance of maintaining a high quality teaching staff that responds to the individualized learning needs of students; who understand the value of forming appropriate and positive relationships with students, colleagues and parents; and provide accurate and productive feedback to students on assignment. We can not hesitate on quality expectations.
There is no district or school policy prohibiting teachers from recording a score of zero for work not done. The district's uniform grading system uses grades A-F, 100-0 and 4-0.
Asked about the wording of "no zeros" on the West Gate Student and Parent Handbook, Padrick said:
"Some teachers and faculties discussed the range of points for the work submitted in each category.
This scale has a range of 10 points for each letter level:
A = 90 to 100
B = 80 to 89
C = 70-79
D = 60-69
F = 50 = 59
A zero is noted on the scale for untested work or incomplete work. "
Tirado said that she had been instructed to never give a student a zero, as the manual says, and she hopes to be able to motivate a policy change.
"A note in Mrs. Tirado's class is acquired," said Tirado.
