A professor alleged to have been a link between Donald Trump's presidential campaign and the Kremlin is "absent and possibly dead," reportedly said.

Joseph Mifsud, 57, a Maltese citizen who reportedly worked at Stirling University in Scotland and at the London Academy of Diplomacy, denied suggestions by a Russian agent.

He came after he would have offered dirt to Democratic Hillary Clinton to Republican help in a London hotel.

However, court documents filed in the United States by Democrats in the context of a lawsuit against Russia, the Trump campaign and WikiLeaks commented on his whereabouts.

According to the Mail on Sunday, the documents indicated that all the defendants in this case had received the complaint "with the exception of Mifsud (who is missing and may have died)".

The newspaper said his fiancee was based in Ukraine with his daughter and that they had not seen him for months.

Mifsud reportedly made an offer to Trump's former adviser, George Papadopoulos, that he could hold a meeting with Vladimir Putin ahead of the 2016 elections.

Papadopoulos was sentenced to 14 days in jail last week for lying to the FBI during his investigation of electoral interference.

Faced with the request for a link, Mr Mifsud said: "Secret agent!

"I've never received a penny from the Russians, my conscience is clean."
