More than three weeks after Hurricane Florence landed in North Carolina, state officials attributed another death to the storm.

A 68-year-old man from Onslow County died as a result of a "natural illness exacerbated by the cleansing following a storm," according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, which determines if a death is related to the storm. This addition brings to 40 the official death toll of Florence in North Carolina.

The man died on September 20, according to the records of the medical examiner. It was added to the list of 39 other storm-related deaths on Monday, a sign of the slow pace and difficulty with which it is difficult to get a complete account of the storm's toll.

The forensic scientist's office did not disclose further details about this man, including his name.

According to federal guidelines, there are two basic types of storm-related deaths: direct and indirect deaths. Although it is relatively easy to determine direct deaths caused by drowning and falling trees, their identification may take longer. These include injuries sustained during cleansing or caused by medical conditions aggravated by storm-related factors, such as a loss of electricity.

Hurricane Florence is now thought to have killed 51 people, including nine in South Carolina and two in Virginia.
