The toll rises to 53 deaths after the bomb blast in the Somali capital

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) – According to Somali police and hospital sources, Friday's bombings in front of a hotel in Mogadishu killed 53 people and left more than 100 wounded.

Captain Mohamed Hussein, a senior Somali police officer, said many injured people had suffered terrible injuries, raising fears that the death toll would be even greater. The figure given by Hussein is in line with the proposals of the hospitals.

Ahmed Yusuf, a nurse from Madina Hospital, said Mogadishu hospitals were coming out to treat the influx of injured victims who continued to arrive Saturday.

Four car bombs by Islamic extremists exploded outside a hotel in the capital, Mogadishu, on Friday afternoon. After the three explosions in front of the hotel, a fourth explosion took place while doctors were trying to rescue the wounded.

Somali Islamic extremist rebels al-Shabab have claimed responsibility for the bombs.
