The second week of the college football season featured only two clashes between ranked opponents. No. 3 Georgia took care of South Carolina No. 24 easily and No. 10 Stanford had no trouble sending USC.
Other major teams like Alabama, Auburn, Ohio State and Oklahoma have also experienced easy days. Only one of the top 25 teams – which you will see later – was upset on Saturday. But that does not mean that there have not been other upheavals in the university football landscape. Here are the five biggest problems of the second week of the season.
5. Colorado State 34, Arkansas 27
Arkansas led the Rams 27-9 at the end of the third quarter. A 2-0 start to Chad Morris as head coach of the Razorbacks seemed inevitable.
That was not it. Shortly after Arkansas missed a field goal that would have allowed them to take the lead 30-9, the Colorado State began its charge. The Rams scored 25 points in the last 18 minutes of the game to stun the Razorbacks 34-27.
The last four CSU races were touchdown, touchdown, field goal and touchdown, while Arkansas missed field placement and had three consecutive penalties. The defensive stops are remarkable for the Rams, a team that gave 88 points in its first two games of the season.
4. East Michigan 20, Purdue 19
Purdue now has 0-2. East Michigan sent a field goal at the end of the allotted time for victory in wet conditions.
The Boilermakers' loss to Northwestern in Week 1 was helped by a late personal penalty as Northwestern tried to break the clock. And guess what, another late personal foul has occurred against EMU again. Purdue prevented EMU from winning the match, but a third bag was canceled by a personal foul that resulted in a first automatic try.
The East Michigan win is second on a Big Ten team. The first came in 2017 when the Eagles defeated Rutgers.
3. Kansas 31, Central Michigan 7
Congratulations to the Jayhawks, who have won a road match for the first time since 2009. This is a period of 46 games and 49 games when you have three losses of neutral sites in this period.
This match goes in the column of evils because the center of Michigan was favored by four points. So it counts.
2. East Carolina 41, North Carolina 19
Things are really bad for the tar heels. Thirteen players serve suspensions for selling shoes issued by the team, UNC was overtaken in the first week against an improved Cal team, and then inexplicably lost against East Carolina in Week 2.
The Pirates lost during the week 1 against the FCS North Carolina A & T. So, by the transitive property, it means that A & T can claim superiority over UNC. This is probably the least of the worries of coach Larry Fedora at this point. The UNC was 3-9 in 2017, but had injury rashes for this season. There are less excuses in 2018. The decline of America – or at least UNC football – may be upon us.
1. Kentucky 27, No. 25 Florida 16
The Wildcats finally beat the Gators. In the swamp, nevertheless. Kentucky has not beaten Florida since 1986, 32 games. The Wildcats tool took the lead with 14 points in the third quarter and Florida was unable to attack in the second period.
Florida beat Charleston Southern in the first week, but his second-period attempts against the Wildcats began with a kick, a controversial missed field goal and an interception. This goal on the pitch could have been good, but it does not matter. The Gators would still have tried to score a goal when Feleipe Franks failed and he was sent off for a touchdown without time.
The game ball was awarded to offensive line coach John Schlarman who deals with cancer.
