Thanksgiving has come and gone and it already looks a lot like Christmas, especially in San Jose.
The Christmas holiday tradition in the park began with a lighting ceremony of more than 550 trees decorated by local schools and community groups in the Plaza de Cesar Chavez.
This year, the community donation tree is not your usual Christmas tree. Instead of the classic lights, the tree has 100 rows of programmable lights synchronized with a musical lights show – a special treatment sponsored by Southwest Airlines.
The tree lighting ceremony also reassured a family affected by the recent camp fire in Paradise, California. Kitty and Mike Smith along with nine family members will help light the community donation tree.
"Everyone has a connection to the tragedy and the Smith family is our family," said Jason Minsky, executive director of Christmas in the Park.
The family lost their home and belongings in the camp's fire and earlier this year, her 40-year-old daughter Crystal and her fiancé, John Lowe, were killed by an alleged drunk driver from County Butte, near Paradise.
To help the camp's fire victims, 100% of all Christmas in the Park donations from Friday to Sunday will be donated to Caring Choices and 25% will be donated to the Smith family.
Christmas in the Park will be open daily until December 25 in the Plaza de Cesar Chavez with several events such as an "ugly evening of Christmas sweaters", "Breakfast with Santa Claus" and "Grinch night".
