WASHINGTON – George Papadopoulos, former campaign advisor to President Donald Trump who was convicted Friday for lying to the FBI, said he was then remembering-Sen. Jeff Sessions is interested in a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Sessions, now Attorney General, told Congress last fall that he had closed the idea of the summit when Papadopoulos raised it at a meeting in 2016.

"All I can say is that my memories differ from those of Sen. Sessions," said Papadopoulos on ABC's "This Week".

"The campaign was fully aware of what I was doing," Papadopoulos said.

Papadopoulos' comments to ABC were the first since his sentencing to two weeks in prison for lying to FBI agents about his interactions with a Russian national while he was working for the Trump campaign. Trump rejected Papadopoulos as a low-level campaign assistant.

Papadopoulos was Trump's first former assistant to be sentenced in the investigation of Special Adviser Robert Mueller on Moscow's interference in the 2016 elections. Three others pleaded guilty or convicted.

Mr. Papadopoulos admitted last year that he lied to the FBI about the interactions in which people he thought related to the Russian government described Moscow as having "thousands of emails" containing damaging information about the candidate. Democrat Hillary Clinton.
