WASHINGTON – The unemployment rate for Americans of Hispanic or Latin American origin fell to 4.5% in September, a record low in July. At the same time, the unemployment rate for white Americans declined slightly to 3.3%, its lowest level since December 1969.
The Ministry of Labor said Friday that employers had created a total of 134,000 jobs last month. The unemployment rate reached 3.7%, its lowest level in nearly five decades. Americans from a wide range of demographic groups enjoyed the longest hiring ever recorded.
The unemployment rate of workers in the prime of life – aged 25 to 54 – has fallen to 3%. This is the lowest figure since December 2000. And Americans with only a high school diploma recorded their best unemployment rate since 2001.
The data for the demographic groups come from a household survey that is part of the Labor Department's monthly employment report.
