The store was essentially founded in 1895, when Henri Bendel left Lafayette, La. To settle in New York, and began creating hats for the city's elite. Stutz was appointed president in 1957.

In 2010, a user of Wikipedia took a photo of the site of the grave, where is a statue representing a molded figured rose, with the names BENDEL and BASTEDO engraved below.
It was later the direction of Henri Bendel who moved the flagship store at the corner of Fifth Avenue, with the iconic Lalique windows of this place.
