Like many country music fans, Jason McMillan had fun at the Road 91 Festival in Las Vegas last October, when filming began.
A deputy Sheriff of Southern California, McMillan went into action and heroically covered his girlfriend with his own body.
"The sound continued to come and go, the" pop, pop, pop "of the shoot," he said.
As the world would soon learn, Stephen Paddock, 64, opened fire on the unsuspecting crowd, killing 58 people and injuring hundreds.
On the floor, McMillan – like so many others – had no way of knowing that Paddock was shooting over in his Mandalay Bay hotel room.
"I'm trying to understand where it's coming from," he said. "I'm no longer at a country concert having fun in. Now I'm back to work and I'm protecting and trying to end the threat."
But the father of two children was among the hundreds injured in the worst mass shootings in modern American history. The injury left him paralyzed under the waist.
Today, nearly a year later, he uses a wheelchair and spends hours in physical therapy.
He also had a puppy – and he was engaged to his girlfriend, Fiorella.
"There are always ways to get around the obstacles you will encounter," he said. "I think that's the way I've always lived."
He also traveled to Hawaii and learned to dive through a program for injured veterans and law enforcement.
In some ways, McMillan's life has changed dramatically. But his willingness to face the challenges head on continues to serve him in his new normalcy.
And he says that he has a personal mantra that speaks of this resilience: "Adapt yourself and try to have fun again."
