Prosecutors claimed that a couple from South Carolina had tried to kidnap the lover of her 20-year-old husband, following rumors circulating around their small seaside town that the young woman might be pregnant.

The revelation surfaced Tuesday in the Tammy Moorer kidnapping trial, accused of conspiring with her husband, Sidney Moorer, to kidnap Heather Elvis, a hostess who mysteriously disappeared in December 2013 from Myrtle Beach.

Prosecutors said Tammy was "jealous" when she learned about Sidney's extramarital affair with Elvis, but became more angry at the possibility of getting 20-year-old pregnant.

Prior to her disappearance, Elvis had quickly gained weight and worn three sizes of bra in her work uniform at the Celtic themed pub, Tilted Kilt, where she first met Sidney, 38, for the first time. prosecutors.

Its manager, Jessica Cooke, said Tuesday that the hostess had passed a pregnancy test before disappearing. The latter proved to be a "mistake".

"Heather and her friends eventually realized that she might be pregnant," Horry County Deputy District Attorney Chris Helms told the court. "When that comes out and becomes public knowledge, the fire and jealousy of Tammy Moorer explode in rage."

In their opening statements, prosecutors claimed that Tammy wanted Elvis removed from the photo and that Sidney was "willing to do anything to please this woman."

"That's where the plan begins," Helms said. "That's where the plot begins."

However, the defense maintained Tammy's innocence in Elvis' disappearance, claiming that she had never met her husband's mistress face to face. They also noticed that phone records put her at home the night the hostess evaporated.

The two Moorings were charged for the disappearance of Elvis. The couple was initially charged with murder and kidnapping in 2014, but the murder charges were dropped two years later.

Sidney was tried last year for his kidnapping, but the proceedings ended with a jury in stalemate. His case was not retried and no future date was set.

Tammy and Sidney were charged with kidnapping conspiracy in 2017. The most recent indictments do not mention Elvis as a victim, but claim that the Moorers conspired on the day of Elvis's disappearance .

Sidney – who is scheduled to testify at his wife's trial this week – was sentenced in 2017 to 10 years in prison for obstructing justice in this case.

The defense team also stated in its opening statements that it was planning to call Tammy to the stand.
