ISLAMABAD – The political party of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said his wife, Kulsoom Nawaz, had died in a London hospital after months in critical condition. She was 68 years old.

Maryam Aurangzeb, a spokeswoman for the Muslim League party in Pakistan, said Nawaz died before dawn on Tuesday.

She said arrangements were underway to bring her body back to Pakistan for burial.

Aurangzeb said that Nawaz was suffering from throat cancer and that she had been operated on in a hospital last year.

Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz have been held in a prison in Pakistan since June, when they returned home to serve their sentences in corruption cases.

Sharif appeared in court in Islamabad on Tuesday. He has also filed for bail, but a court has yet to rule on his application.
