Q: Why could the Yankees not extend their lead over the A?
Gardner: As for the extension of something against Oakland, Oakland has a very good team and she plays very well in baseball. I think they only have two or three games behind the Astros for first place in the West. So we're not happy with the way we've played lately, but I feel like the guys are still working hard and trying to do our best.
Maybe tonight was obviously one of those nights when we fell behind and Didi came up with a grand slam which brought us back into the match but in the last two innings was not able to do many things. But he gave us a chance with this swing of the bat, so just a tough match for us tonight and we'll be back tomorrow to try to win the series and go home where we usually play well.
Q: What is the feeling in the club?
Gardner: Frustrated. Disappointed. I do not think any of these words fit the bill. We have a better team than the way we play. We know that we can do better and, hopefully, in the next few weeks, that everything will be fine and if we play as we can, we will come back in a few months and we will not see anything. This will really matter, or if we do not play as well as we can, we will get home sooner and that's how the game is. There are a lot of good teams in the American League and the National League and so we can compete with them and be where we want to be in the end, we have to play better.
Q: Do you trust that the team will change things?
Gardner: I do. I certainly do it. The group of guys that we have in place, the moves we made on the deadline – not just the player side with the hitters, but also the pitchers we have, the crew we have. I have a lot of confidence in our team. I expect from us, including myself, that these past two weeks we are truly safe and allow us to get where we need to be.
