Theories of the plot float about the New Mexico observatory evacuated near Roswell

A mysterious evacuation of the solar observatory in remote New Mexico sparks a series of conspiracy theories ranging from sightings of strangers to foreign spies.

The solar sunspot observatory was shut down unexpectedly and evacuated for no public reason last Thursday – and a week later nobody seems to know why.

While local law enforcement forces were solicited at the scene in the city of Sunspot, they stated that they had remained in the dark. Benny House of the Otero County Sheriff's Office told ABC News that observatory staff had called his team around 10 am on Thursday, 6 September. He said the team had spent a few hours evacuating employees.

"They were quiet about what was going on, nobody would tell us what the threat was," House said, confirming that the FBI was present.

A nearby post office was also evacuated. A US postal official told ABC affiliate KVIA in El Paso, Texas, that he did not know who ordered the postal workers to leave.

The observatory is run by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, or AURA, which issued a statement on the "security" incident.

"AURA is addressing a security issue at the National Solar Observatory in Sacramento Peak, New Mexico and has decided to temporarily leave the facility as a precautionary measure," said Shari Lifson, AURA Communications Coordinator. Lifson said that AURA was working with the authorities on the issue, but did not provide any additional information.

Since the evacuation last week, the Sunspray Observatory website has also published an opinion:

"On Thursday, September 6th, AURA made the decision to temporarily close Sunspot.Sunspot Solar Observatory continues to work closely with AURA to allow us to reopen as soon as possible.Visit us when we open and see you by yourself the services we offer for scientific and public awareness in heliophysics. "

The lack of explanation left a lot of room for the internet to conjecture and create plots.

The FBI of Albuquerque has not yet responded to ABC News' request for comment.

Whether extraterrestrials, government secrets, foreign spies or anything of the above, what is certain: the observatory remains closed, with no word on when it will reopen.
